This eight-week course is part 1 of a 3 part series intended for anyone working in indigent defense, in any job category, who would like to increase their understanding of how racism impacts us and the systems we work in, as well as to develop some concrete strategies to address these concerns.   Part 1 of the series will focus on the issues concerning personal racism, identity, and other relevant topics related to one’s individual relationship with race and bias.  This course is designed to support the individual development of cognitive strategies related to anti-bias issues, to promote a communitarian approach in creating a public defense culture of humility, and ultimately to advocate for systemic change to support clients and colleagues in indigent defense work, thereby increasing access to justice.

Today’s environment has presented a definite shift in the manner in which organizations address diversity, equity and inclusion. This session focused on developing an understanding of DEI perspectives in professional spaces, practical skills to address organizational DEI concerns and ways to leverage the law in order to support building a positive, inclusive, and resilient workplace culture while also dispelling incorrect understandings of what is and isn’t recommended and permissible.
